Bushbuckridge Water (BW) is a public entity listed as Schedule 3 part B: National Government Business Enterprise in terms of the Public Finance Management Act 1 of 1997 (as amended by Act 29 of 1999).
Bushbuckridge Water’s primary responsibility is to provide bulk water services to other water services institutions (Water Service Authorities, ie municipalities). The current Water Services Authorities (WSA) are Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM) and Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) – Nsikazi area. These areas are mainly rural and semi-urban with a population of about 1.2-million people.
This dam was built in the catchment of the Sabie River, which serves as a storage facility for a pipeline transfer scheme in Busbuckridge. The dam supplies bulk raw water for domestic use to the rural and semi-urban population consisting of more than a million people. The dam also has an environmental impact on the catchment of the Sabie river due to the fact that access runoff is released in a controlled manner to ensure supply in the natural riverine environment and in the adjoining Nature reserves.
